The History of Barbour
Barbour was founded by John Barbour in 1894 in South Shields, England. During the initial days of its inception, the company was the importer of oil-cloth. They received 75% of their orders using a mail catalog. By the following years, John Barbour, Jack, Malcolm, and Duncan joined the company as the Chairman and Managing Director of the company.
Duncan Barbour was a keen motorcyclist. He unveiled a special motorcycling range of clothing suit known as the waxed cotton motorcycling suit which was later worn by almost every British International Team from 1936 to 1977.
Duncan was then called out for war. Malcolm Barbour and Duncan’s wife Nancy took over the business and they developed a special Ursula suit that later became the standard for all the members providing the submarine service.
Thereafter, Barbour introduced its lightweight thornproof short riding jacket along with its all-new Beaufort jacket. Over the years Barbour had received around 3 Royal warrant.
By the year 1988, Barbour Trust was set up to support the projects at the local and nationwide scale. At that time, Margaret Barbour had donated over 20% of her shares of the company to the trust.
Barbour won a special commendation in Sunday Times. Their jacket was the jacket of choice at the Glastonbury Festival. The company also won the best shooting clothing product at the IPC Shooting Industry Awards.
